Mary Hubbard McCord
January 13, 2010

Mary Hubbard McCord, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010 due to complications from a heart attack suffered earlier in the week. She is preceded in death by her parents Lonnie and Bessie, husband Forrest, sister Bernice and daughter Diane. She is survived by daughter Mary Bach; sons Forrest McCord, Jr., Richard McCord and Larry McCord; 17 grandchildren; and over 20 great grandchildren.
Mary was born on December 28, 1919 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and had just celebrated her 90th birthday at the family caroling party where she witnessed several of her grandchildren carrying on her musical legacy at the piano and in song. Although primarily a full-time mother and homemaker, she did hold positions at North American Aviation and LTV and served as church secretary at Oakwoods Christian Church and Brooklyn Avenue United Methodist Church in Oak Cliff, where she also served as organist. Oak Cliff was Mary’s home for much of adolescence and adult life, where she attended Oak Cliff/Adamson High School and Oak Cliff Methodist Church. In 1936, she and lifelong friend Mary Kinnan were chosen to ride on a float with Ginger Rogers in the Texas Centennial Celebration at Fair Park, a fact she did not reveal until much later in life because the two knew their mothers would be scandalized by the “revealing” outfits they had to wear. She and Mary Kinnan also attended the Toperette Club at the local YWCA to dance with available young men, where they met friends Jane Mathis, Virginia Burnap and Lee Johnson with whom they continued to have lunch once a month until Mary entered a care facility in 2007.
The family home at 1146 Oxbow Lane in Oak Cliff, where she raised four of her five children, was the site of many big family gatherings over the years, which is probably one of the reasons “Aunt Mary” became like a mother to many of her nephews and nieces. The family moved to their last home at 635 E. Cherry in Duncanville in 1970, and this soon became the site for the annual Christmas Caroling Party during which the family would regularly go door to door singing songs of the season. Aunt Mary continued to be a great source of love and joy at family birthdays and other gatherings up until the time of her death.
When all of her children ended up living in other parts of the state or nation, nieces Judy Guy, Mary Julien and Sharon McMullen and nephew John McMullen and Ada Quintanilla did much to take care of Mary in their absence as did her sister-in-law Peggy McCoy. After her longtime church home, Brooklyn Avenue United Methodist, closed, she became a member of FUMC Duncanville, where she regularly played piano for her Sunday School class. She was an avid bridge player throughout her life and continued to play with various groups until 2007.
Mary passed on her love of music to her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to second and third generations. All of her children played an instrument and/or sang at some point in their lives and two made music their profession, to the point of performances at the International Youth and Music Festival and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Despite declining health, Mary continued to show her fun-loving nature and passion for music right up through the last week of her life. When the ER staff were working with her Monday night following her heart attack, she was singing “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, bringing a smile to all their faces. She is loved and will be missed by all.
