Vera Lucille Wright
August 26, 2010
Vera Lucille Wright, cherished wife, mother and grandmother, lovingly known to her family as “Lucille”, “Snookie”, “Mama”, “Mamaw” and “Grandma”, passed away August 25, 2010, at the age of 90. She was born Vera Lucille Palmer in Bells, Texas, on November 12, 1919 to parents Arthur D and Vera Hannah Palmer. A long time resident of Oak Cliff, she was a proud graduate of W. H. Adamson High School, class of 1937. Due to a family health crisis and the waning years of the Great Depression, she was unable to pursue her dream of going to college. Instead she sought employment with the Ripley Shirt Company where she soon found success as Executive Secretary to the company Vice President, Mr. Boyd.
About this same time, she met her lifelong sweetheart, John Thomas Wright, at Oak Cliff First Baptist Church. Their marriage plans were interrupted by a small international “incident”, more commonly known as Word War II, and Tommy’s call from Uncle Sam. For over three years, while he was stationed in Alaska, she wrote him a letter every day. His stacks of letters during mail call became legendary and he willingly shared them with any of the guys in his unit who were not receiving mail. Lucille only found out about his “generosity” when many of his buddies began writing back to her and calling when they came through Dallas. They all wanted to meet the lovely redhead who had so faithfully sent all of the letters.
Upon Tommy’s return from the war, he and Lucille were married in January of 1945. While Tommy went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Lucille chose to give up her secretarial career to become a full time homemaker. She and Tommy lived in Oak Cliff for 65 years, raising two daughters, and enjoying five lively grandchildren. Lucille instilled in her daughters and grandchildren a lifelong love of reading and the arts. She was so very proud that her four oldest grandchildren attended the Arts Magnet High School in Dallas and her youngest grandchild was currently in the Art’s Academy. She eagerly attended every theatre production, dance recital, and choir concert until health concerns slowed her down.
Lucille was a lifelong Baptist and for many years was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church and more recently Wynnewood Baptist Church. She was also a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sister, Mabel Louise Palmer. Survived by her loving husband of 65 years, John Thomas Wright; daughter Carolyn Tipton and husband Glynn; daughter Patricia Erickson and husband Steven; granddaughters Erin Tipton, Elspeth Erickson, Elisa Tipton, Kestrel Erickson, and grandson Rowan Erickson.
Visitation with family will be at Jaynes Memorial Chapel, 811 South Cockrell Hill Road, Duncanville, TX on Saturday, August 28, 1:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 pm. Reverend Keith Brister officiating. Interment service will be at Old Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Texas. [send flowers]
